Aloe barbadensis or Aloe vera

Origin :
Undoubtedly native to the Canary Islands, it has now acclimatised to the whole Mediterranean coast.

Description :
This perrenial plant is short and robust (30 to 60 cm high). At the top of the trunk is a bulb from which about fifty long, thick, fleshy leaves extend, thorny on the edges and green and waxy leaves. We also recognise it thanks to the yellow or orange flowers arranged in ears.

Properties :
It has soothing, moisturising, purifying and regenerative properties. It is also considered as a depolluting plant.

History :
In Greek antiquity, the word «aloe» used to refer to bitter substances of the vegetal world. It nowadays only refers to the plant itself: it had for a long time been used in medicine, as a laxative and to cure colds.
